Mauricio Cárdenas was appointed Minister of Finance and Public Credit in August 2012. He was previously Minister of Mines and Energy, and before that Minister of Economic Development, Minister of Transport, as well as Director of the national Planning Department. In the private sector, he served as Director of the Higher Education and Development Foundation (Fedesarrollo).
Following the re-election of President Santos in June 2014, Mr. Cárdenas was re-appointed as Finance Minister in the new administration.
He holds a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of California, Berkeley and has been a Visiting Scholar at the Center for International Development, Harvard University, and Director at the Latin America Initiative, Brookings Institution.
